SEWKUMAR, BOURNE AND PAEZ EARN ALL-STATE HONORS; QUALIFY FOR N.Y. NATIONAL TEAM
This past weekend in Binghamton, NY, STEVEN SEWKUMAR, SEAN BOURNE and MARC PAEZ all earned All-State honors. They have now qualified for the New York State National Team in Fargo, North Dakota in July. SEAN BOURNE defeated Theo Powers of Mexico (Syracuse-Section 3) by a score of 5-2, 4-1 in the first round on his way to placing 4th at 106 lbs. in the Cadet Greco-Roman competition. Powers placed 6th in the NYS Wrestling Championships in Albany in February. MARC PAEZ placed 4th in the 138 lb. Greco-Roman competition and 6th in the freestyle competition. Both of these young men are making great strides this spring. STEVEN SEWKUMAR followed up his 3rd place finish in Albany this season with a 3rd place finish in freestyle to earn All-State honors. Byron Wins Northeast Regional Gold!
Talented 8th grader TYRESE BYRON won the Northeast Regional freestyle championship this past weekend held at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. He avenged a loss to Mack Berkowitz of Locust Valley who defeated him earlier in the year. Great job! Sean Bourne, Marc Paez and Tyus Hill also competed for Long Beach. (May 2, 203)

PALACIO WIN FILA JUNIOR NATIONAL FREESTYLE TITLE
Tonight DYLAN PALACIO won the 74kg/163 lb. freestyle NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in Las Vegas, Nevada. PALACIO defeate the #1 see in the quarterfinals and then an opponent from the Hawkeye Wrestling Club (University of Iowa) in the semi-finals. He then defeated Matt Gray of North Dakota State to win the title. He will compete in the World Team Trials in June for a spot on the US World Team in Serbia. CONGRATULATION DYLAN. (June 20, 2013)

SEWKUMAR WINS SCHOLARSHIP
Last night at the Nassau County Wrestling Dinner Steven Sewkumar was awarded the Nassau County Wrestling Coaches Association Scholarship. He and Alan Teemer, who placed third in Nassau County this season each received awards and a fleecefor their accomplishments on the mat this season. (April 10, 2013)
SEWKUMAR WINS ALL-AMERICAN HONORS; JACORI TEEMER NABS MIDDLE SCHOOL ALL-AMERICAN HONORS
STEVEN SEWKUMAR became the 26th high school All-American for the Long Beach Marines by placing 8th in the National High School Coaches Association Tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia.. SEWKUMAR started off the tournament with a 9-2 win over California All-State Joey Vigil and followed that up with a 6-2 win over Kansas state finalist Josh Goepfert. In the quarterfinals, SEWKUMAR dropped a thrilling hard fought 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker overtime match to Ohio State Champion Aron Assad. Assad is in the finals. In the Consolation All-American round he defeated his opponent 6-2 to secure a place on the podium. SEWKUMAR joins his brother KRISHNA SEWKUMAR (5th-2012) and cousin MARK RAGHUNANDAN (5th-2012 and 2x Fargo All-American) as ALL-AMERICANS. Steven finishes his high school career as a Nassau County Champion, All-State and All-American. Rising freshman SHAWN BOURNE, ANDREW GARCIA and MARC PAEZ competed as well. PAEZ won a match. The Schoolboy (Middle School) state freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships were held in Binghamton, NY on Saturday. The Long Beach Gladiators Club dominated the competition. Coach Rodriguez and Coach Davis brought home a number of STATE CHAMPIONS and placewinners. MATT MAQUET, CHARLIE SPADA, JOHN COLLETTI, TYRESE BYRON all won championships. They have all qualified to represent TEAM NY at the Schoolboy National Duals. Coach Rodriguez will also be coaching that team. LUCA MANGIARANO also had a great tournament and earned All-State honors. Great job by our young guns.

SPADA WINS SCHOOLBOY STATE TITLE; TEEMER AND DEALE FINISH SECOND
CHARLIE SPADA won the New York State Middle School state wrestling championships with a pin in the finals. SPADA had an outstanding year wrestling for the varsity this season. JACORI TEEMER scored an exciting pin in the semi-finals over his opponent from Lindenhurst before dropping an his final bout. Future star VINCENT DEALE turned in a dominating 8-0 major decision in the semi-finals over his opponent from New Rochelle. He dropped his final match but great things are expected from him in the future. Also placing for Long Beach were; MATT MAQUET (3RD), TYRESE BYRON (3RD) and GREGG WILDSTEIN (6TH). Great job! The program is looking forward to these young men becoming the next group of great champions for Long Beach.
SEWKUMAR PLACES THIRD IN N.Y.S.
STEVEN SEWKUMAR finished in third place at the New York State Wrestling Championships in Albany, NY this past weekend. He opened up the tournament with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Thomas Hill of Fulton High School (Section 3). He had to ride out the Section 3 champion in the third period to secure the win. In the quarterfinals, SEWKUMAR upset third seeded Bryan Lantry of Wayne High School (Section 5). Lantry came into the tournament with a 44-1 record. With the match tied at one, SEWKUMAR finished a single leg takedown in overtime to secure the win and advance to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, he lost to eventual champion and outstanding wrestler Nick Piccinninni of Ward Melville (Section 11-Suffolk County). SEWKUMAR wrestled back like a true champion. He won his next match over John Stramiello of Section 9 (Orange County) with a thrilling 3-1 overtime win. In the match for third, SEWKUMAR would once again face Bryan Lantry of Wayne. Lantry picked bottom in the second period and SEWKUMAR tilted him twice to earn four back points and won the match 6-5 to capture the bronze medal and a third place finish. SEWKUMAR finishes the season with 44 wins. Nassau County (Section 8) finished in second place behind Section 11- Suffolk County. DEJESUS COMPETES IN JUNIOR COLLEGE NATIONALS
ADAM DEJESUS, a 2011 Nassau County Champion and All-State wrestler for Long Beach High School placed second in the N.J.C.A.A. Regional Tournament for Nassau Community College and qualified for the national championships in Iowa. DeJesus, the #6 seed, upset the #2 and #3 seed to advance to the finals. At the nationals, Adam lost both matches by tough decisions. Nassau Community College won the non-scholarship National Championship. In addition, VINCENT HALL (LB Class of 2010) placed 5th in the National Qualifier for Jamestown Community College at 285 lbs. The program is very proud of both young men. (February 24, 2013)

STEVEN SEWKUMAR became the 61st Nassau County Champion in Long Beach Wrestling history with a 6-5 win over Adam Smith of East Meadow. Click on link below for full story. He will now advance to the N.Y.S. Championships on February 22 and 23 at the Times Union Center in Albany. Sophomore ALAN TEEMER placed 3rd in the tournament earning All-County honors. CHARLIE SPADA, KEITH WILDSTEIN, WALTER ULLOA, ZAMARR ALLEN, JAEMEN CONNOLLY and MATT MAQUET also won matches for the Marines. SPADA and ALLEN lost in the All-County round. 15 LB GRAPPLERS EARN ALL-LEAGUE HONORS; 10 QUALIFY FOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS
The young Long Beach Marines wrestler's wrestled their best tournament of the season on Saturday at the Nassau County Qualifying Tournament at Baldwin High School. In all, 15 of the 26 wrestlers entered walked away with All-League honors and 10 young men qualified for the Nassau County Championships. The team was led by finalists Matt Maquet (99-8th grader), Alan Teemer (106-10th) and Zamarr Allen (195-12th). Third place finishers were Charlie Spada (106-8th), Steven Sewkumar (113-12th), Keith Wildstein (145-11th) and Michael Alcivar (152-11th). Fourth place finishers were Walter Ulloa (220-12th), Jonathan Greifenberger (126-11th) and Jaemen Connelly (113-11th). Placing 5th were Marke Sutton (132-11th) and Andrew Garcia (126-9th). Sixth place finishers were Shawn Bourne (99-9th), Tyler O'Conner (126-11th) and Tyreek Bromley (152-8th). In addition a number of other Marines won matches in the tournament. The following boys won matches and fell one win short of placing: Dylan Kempinski (120-11th), John Colletti (120-8th), Tyrese Byron (132-8th), Joe Sweeney (138-12th) and K.J. Morton (170-11th). The team finished in second place behind champion MacArthur. The team competes next at the Nassau County Championships at Hofstra University on Friday and Saturday. Long Beach was unable to reach the finals of the Nassau County Dual Meet Playoffs for the second straight year. They fell to Levittown Division 37-26. The Marines were led by Keith Wildstein, Mike Alcivar, Zamarr Allen, Walter Ulloa, Jaemen Connelly and Steven Sewkumar who all won their matches. The team finishes the year with a 7-6 dual meet record and finished third in League 2 behind MacArthur and Mepham. It was the first time in three years that the Marines did not capture the League Championship. The team is back in action on Saturday at the Nassau County Qualifying Tournament at Baldwin High School. (January 27, 2013)LONG BEACH BEATS V.S.S 81-6 AND DROPS TOUGH ONE TO LONGWOOD IN LAST MATCH
Long Beach defeated Nassau County foe Valley Stream South 81-6 to pusch its dual meet record to 7-2 and a seven match winning streak. The team lost to Walt Whitman but Steven Sewkumar knocked off Joe Calderone 6-4. Calderone finished 4th in NYS last year. In the match verse Longwood the winner would be decided in the last match but Longwood won the bout and the match. Sophomore Alan Teemer lost a 6-2 decision to 3X All-County wrestler Anthony Donofrio but gave him everything he could handle. The Marines are now 7-5 in dual meets and will compete in the Nassau County Dual Meet Tournament on Friday night. The time and place will be announced on Tuesday night.

In a match-up of league rivals, MacArthur, ranked 15th in NYS defeated the Marines 47-15. The Generals prevented LB from winning its third straight League 2A title. The senior laden Macarthur team was to much for the young Marines. In a battle of ranked wrestlers, #6 Matt Maquet knocked off #4 Travis Cooksey of MacArthur 8-5. At 106, Alan Teemer recorded a fall over Vince Thron to continue his winning ways. The JV won again and is 10-0. The team heads to the Timm Collins duals at Farmingdale High School tomorrow and will face Walt Whitman(19-3) and Suffolk powerhouse Longwood. (January 18, 2013)LONG BEACH TRIPS UP CALHOUN
Long Beach won their sixth straight match with a 36-29 win over Calhoun. The Marines are now 6-2 in dual meets and 3-1 in League 2A competition. The team will wrestle MacArthur on Friday night will a share of the League title on the line. Key wins were turned in by Alan Teemer who defeated 2012 League Champion Matt Krausse by a 13-2 major decision, Steven Sewkumar, Jon Greifenberger, Marke Sutton, Joe Sweeney, Keith Wildstein and Zamarr Allen. Allen clinched the match with a key win at 195 lbs. Walter Ulloa lost a 2-0 match to #1 ranked Jennard Rosemond. The JV won again and is 9-0.

While the varsity team traveled to upstate Sullivan County, the JV team wrestled in the Kellenberg Varsity Tournament. Charlie Spada led the way by finishing in second place. Mark Paez and Shawn Bourne placed 4th. Elijah Rodriguez and Jacori Teemer placed 5th. Great job. The future looks bright.

Thirteen Long Beach grapplers traveled to Sullivan County College to compete in the Eastern States Wrestling Championships. Regarded as the toughest tournament in NYS, 113 team were represented. Last year, the Marines placed 3rd in the tournament as Mark Raghunandan and Dylan Palacio won titles. Steven Sewkumar was a quarterfinalist, but lost to defending NYS Champion Nick Piccininni of Ward Melville. Sophomore Alan Teemer defeated the #11 seed by major decision in the first round 12-3. Mike Alcivar won a match and gave the #2 seed all he could handle in an 8-6 defeat. The young Marines had a rough but meaningful experience.

Long Beach ran their dual record to 5-2 with a lopsided 71-6 victory over Valley Stream Central. The league win puts the Marines record at 2-1 in league play. Tyler O'Conner turned in a great performance turning in a 13-7 win . Jonathan Greifenberger won a hard fought 14-12 match in overtime. Walter Ullao also had a big win in double overtime. The Marines won a key League match on Friday night defeating Port Washington 39-36. On Saturday, the team defeated Seaford, Sewanaka East and Cardozo. The matches were the first home matches of the year held at Lindell. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the team. The team now boasts a 4-2 dual meet record on the year. Long Beach won two championships at the tough Massapequa Tournament. Steven Sewkumar won his second title of the year by defeating his opponent in overtime 10-3. Zamarr Allen won his first career tournament title by pinning his opponent from Connetequot in the first period. Matt Maquet (3rd), Alan Teemer (3rd) and Jaemen Connelly (4th) all placed for the Marines. The team finished in fifth place behind Connetequot, Hauppauge, Pittsford and Monroe-Woodbury. The Marines fell to 0-2 in dual meet play as the #3 ranked Mepham Pirates won 50-19. The match was televised on MSG Varsity. Winners for LB were Charlie Spada (106) who turned in a great performance by pinning two-time All County wrestler Jamie Dunn. Jaemen Connelly won by pin and Keith Wildstein won by decision. Glenn Rutherig pulled down a forfeit win at 285. The JV won their second straight match and are now 2-0. (December 19, 2012)LONG BEACH GRAPPLES AT MADISION SQUARE GARDEN
The Marines had a great opportunity this past weekend to wrestle in the "Grapple at the Garden". Wrestling alongside college powerhouses Iowa, Oklahoma State, Cornell, Missouri, Maryland, Nebraska and Hofstra, seven Marines placed in the tournament. 8th graders Matt Maquet (99) and Charlie Spada (106) both reached the finals and dropped decisions. It was a great job by both! Steven Sewkumar dropped a tough match in the semi-finals to 2012 state finalist Chieck Ndiaye and finished third. Walter Ulloa placed 4th. Joe Sweeny and Zamarr Allen placed 7th and Mike Alcivar placed 8th. During the event, Dylan Palacio, now wrestling for the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club at Cornell was presented an award for winning the NYS Triple Crown of Wrestling last year. It was very exciting for the team to compete in the most famous arena in the world. The team finished in 6th place of 37 teams. (Dec. 16, 2012) LOCUST VALLEY DROPS LB IN DUAL OPENER
In the opening dual of the 2012 season, #2 ranked Locust Valley defeated LB 48-17. The match was televised on MSG Varsity. Winners for LB were Matt Maquet, Jaemen Connelly, Glenn Rutherig and Zamarr Allen. The JV team dominated LV to run their record to 1-0 in duals. The next dual will be December 19 at Mepham.

The Long Beach Marines turned in a solid performance at the Baldwin Bruin Cup Tournament this weekend. Eighth-grader Matt Maquet burst onto the scene winning his first varsity tournament. He edged his opponent from Longwood 5-3. Great job. Steven Sewkumar defeated Ben Lamantia of St. Anthony's and was voted the tournaments Outstanding Wrestler. Zamarr Allen reached his second straight finals before losing to #1 ranked Dan Choi of Syosset for the second week in a row. Other placewinners were: Cain Tagliagambe (5th), Charlie Spada (6th), Jaemen Connelly (6th), Keith Wildstein (4th), Walter Ulloa (6th) and Juan Melvin Sorto (5th). The team finished 5th overall defeating Freeport and St. Anthony's. The team won the Bruin Cup for the third straight year. The coaches team who wrestled for Baldwin who finishes the highest secures the cup.

Despite losing their gym to Hurricane Sandy, the LB Marines wrestling team opened the 2013 campaign by hosting the 9th Annual "Battle at the Beach" Wrestling Tournament. Kindly, Lynbrook H.S. and Coach Rich Renz offered to host the tournament. It was a great success. Leading the way for the Marines were finalist Steven Sewkumar (113) and Zamarr Allen (195). Both finished in second place but did a great job. Finishing in third place for LB was Joe Sweeney (138). Freshman Cain Tagliagambe (99) and Jonathan Greifenberger (125) placed 4th. Jaemen Connelly (113), Marke Sutton (138) and Juan Melvin Sorto (285) placed 5th. Sean Bourne (99) placed 6th. Jordan Burroughs won the first gold medal for the U.S.A. today in London. He defeated the Russian in the semi's and the Iranian in the finals. He is from New Jersey and wrestled at the University of Nebraska. He was an N.C.A.A. Champion and World Champion last fall. The wrestling action resumes tomorrow. PALACIO FINISHES 4TH AT JR. NATIONALS
DYLAN PALACIO will head to Cornell in the fall, but he had a last bit of work to do as a Long Beach Marine. PALACIO earned the sixth ALL-AMERICAN honor of his career by finishing 4th at the ASICS Junior National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. PALACIO won his first seven matches, not losing a period and giving up only five points. After defeating Wisconsin State Champion and All-American Nick Becker, PALACIO dropped at 2-1, 4-1 decision to California State Champion and eventual Freestyle National Champion Isiaiah Martinez. He becomes the 25th high school All-American from Long Beach. Fargo marks the end of one of the greatest careers of any Long Beach wrestler. Best of luck at Cornell. (July 22, 2012)

PALACIO WINS TRIPLE CROWN AND O.W.; ALLEN AND MEDINA EARN ALL-STATE HONORS
This past weekend, the Long Beach-USA Wrestling Club traveled to Binghamton, New York to compete in the New York State Freestyle and Greco-Roman State Championships. DYLAN PALACIO claimed the Greco-Roman title win a pin over All-American Burke Paddock and earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award. In the freestyle tournament, he defeated Tyler Grimaldi of Suffolk County 5-0, 5-0. ORAL ALLEN had a great weekend and finished second in both styles. Last year, he won both styles. FREDDY MEDINA turned in an outstanding performance in the freestyle tournament as he defeated Dylan Stowell of Gouvernour for the bronze medal. Stowell finished fourth in NYS in Albany. All three young men now qualify for the National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota in July. (May 7, 2012)

ORAL ALLEN and FREDDY MEDINA both won individual titles at the NYS Qualifier held at Baldwin High School. Both young men won 3 matches to claim the gold medal. RAGHUNANDAN defeated Erik Orellana of Brentwood 2-1, 6-0 to win the 123 lb. bout. Orellana earned All-American honors this year by placing third at the High School National Championships. RAGHUNANDAN was also an All-American placing 5th. KRISHNA SEWKUMAR turned in a hard fought 2-1, 3-4, 6-1 decision over Joe Calderone of Suffolk. Calderone placed 4th in New York State this past season. This weekend the LB-USA Wrestling Club will compete in the Nassau County State Freestyle Qualifier at Baldwin H.S.

ALAN TEEMER IS WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
Ninth grader ALAN TEEMER is the Long Beach Wrestler of the Week for the week ending on Sunday April 22. TEEMER turned in an outstanding performance at the Battle at the Shore Tournament at Baldwin High School. Among his wins, he defeated Hector Guerero of Plainedge 6-2. Guerero was an All-County performer this season finishing 4th. In addition, he scored an impressive 10-3 decision over Matt Krauss of Calhoun. Krauss was a Qualifying Tournament Champion for Calhoun this year. Great job Alan! "Alan Teemer is working the hardest of anyone in the program this off-season. His efforts are going to pay great dividends for him next year and the years to come.", commented Head Coach Ray Adams. MIKE ALCIVAR went 1-1. In the Middle School Division, Long Beach was represented well. NASSAU COUNTY WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: DYLAN PALACIO
DYLAN PALACIO was awarded the Sprig Gardner/Friends of Long Island Wrestling Nassau County Wrestler of the Year at the Nassau County Wrestling All-County Dinner on Tuesday night. He becomes the third Long Beach grappler to win this award in the last twelve years. Jonathan Masa won the award in 2000 and P.J. Gillespie in 2007. PALACIO also won the Dennis Dunne Scholarship and the Gary Ventimiglia Scholarship. MARK RAGHUNANDAN won the Nassau County Wrestling Coaches Association Scholarship. All of the eight All-County wrestlers were presented jackets and trophies for their achievment. The Long Beach coaching staff was also voted the League 2 Coaches of the Year for the second consecutive year. In addition, former LB wrestler and coach STEPHEN JONES was voted the League 3 Coach of the Year for Hewlett High School. (April 3)

PALACIO WINS NATIONALS! RAGHUNANDAN AND SEWKUMAR EARN ALL-AMERICAN HONORS
DYLAN PALACIO is a National Champion. Palacio capped a perfect 48-0 season by capturing the 152 lb. National High School Coaches Association title in Virginia Beach, Va. In the finals, Palacio defeated 3X Georgia state champion Austin Trott with a dominating 6-2 decision. Dylan went 7-0 in the largest weight class in the tournament with victories over state champions from: Oklahoma, Minnesota and Arizona. He is the second National Champion for Long Beach joining JONATHAN MASA (2000).
MARK RAGHUNANDAN finished his high school career strong by earning ALL-AMERICAN honors by placing 5th in the country. RAGHUNANDAN won five matches in the tournament. He recorded wins over a 3X Connecticut state champion and a 3X Michigan state champion along the way. His biggest win came in the All-American round when he defeated defending national runner-up Javier Vierya of Kansas 2-1 to notch ALL-AMERICAN status.
KRISHNA SEWKUMAR capped off his great career with a 5th place finish as well. He turned in big wins over a 2X Utah and a 2X Arizona state champion to earn his first ALL-AMERICAN honors. In the quarterfinals, SEWKUMAR dropped a tough 5-3 decision to eventual champion Phazon Roddy of North Carolina. Long Beach helped Team NY to a second place finish in the nation. LONG BEACH had three senior All-Americans which is the most any New York High School has had in the 20+ history of the event.
PALACIO LEADS TEAM NY OVER NJ IN MATCH FOR AUTISM AND CANCER
DYLAN PALACIO was at it again today! The undefeated NY STATE CHAMPION squared off against the undefeated NJ State Champion Raamiah Bethea in the prestigous NY/NJ Charity Dual to benefit "Pinning Down Autism" and the "Adam Frey Foundation". Trailing 2-1 at the beginning of the third period, PALACIO turned Bethea for 3 back points and then turned him again with an overhead cradle to record the only fall of the night. NY defeated the team of NJ State Champs 27-23. It came down to the 285 lb. match and in O.T. NY won the bout. PALACIO was voted the MVP of the event. Congrats to Dylan and Dad Leo! WRESTLERS HONORED BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The Long Beach Wrestling Team was honored at the monthly meeting of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce. All team members were presented medals for winning the League 2 Championship this year. The All-State athletes, DYLAN PALACIO, KRISHNA SEWKUMAR and MARK RAGHUNANDAN were presented plaques by the Chamber as was the coaching staff. ALTON FINISHES 3RD IN NATION FOR PENN STATE
DYLAN ALTON finished in third place for the Penn State Nittany Lions at 157 lbs. at the National Championships in St. Louis. Penn State won their second consecutive National Championship for Head Coach Cael Sanderson. Alton is the son of Long Beach County Champion Neil Alton. Great job and congrats to Dylan and Neil. GILLESPIE FALLS ONE WIN FROM ALL-AMERICAN HONORS; ENDS GREAT CAREER
Long Beach great P.J. GILLESPIE finished up his college career at Hofstra University. He dropped his final match in the All-American round to Conrad Polz of Illinois 3-1 in O.T. to be eliminated. GILLESPIE excited the crowd with a hard fought 5-3 win over tough Scott Winston of Rutgers in the first round and then Iowa a big blow by knocking off their #5 ranked wrestler Mike Evans 4-3. In the quarters, P.J. dropped a touch 6-1 decision to Abdurahkmanov of Clarion. He leaves Hofstra as a 2011 ALL-AMERICAN, 4X N.C.A.A. Qualifier, 2X C.A.A. Champion, 2008 USAW University All-American and team Captain. At Long Beach, he graduated as the all-time wins leader in Nassau County history (214), won the 2007 145 lb. State Championship, was a 4X All-State wrestler, 4X Nassau County Champion and a 5X high school All-American. The Hofstra senior won his final match 4-1 to advance to the NCAA Division One Wrestling Championships in St. Louis in two-weeks. Last year, GILLESPIE earned All-American honors by placing 8th. Long Beach wrestling is now tied with Mepham for the most state champions in Nassau County history....10. Senior DYLAN PALACIO etched his name into history Saturday night at the Times Union Center in Albany. Before a huge crowd, PALACIO turned in a dominating 11-4 victory over tough Tyler Grimaldi of Half Hollow Hills West (Section 11-Suffolk County). PALACIO won four matches to claim the pinnacle of wrestling in NYS. In attendence were his Dad Leo and uncles Luis and Al. It was a great weekend. Congratulations to Dylan, Leo and the whole family. KRISHNA SEWKUMAR dropped his semi-final match but bounced back with two great wins to place third. He leaves as a 2x All-State wrestler. MARK RAGHUNANDAN placed 6th in the Public School portion of the tournament. He graduates as one of only four Long Beach wrestlers to earn All-State honor three times. The others are Al Palacio (4x), P.J. Gillespie (4X) and Dylan Palaci (3X). Overall, Long Beach placed 7th in the state as an individual team. Dylan Palacio, Mark Raghunandan and Krishna Sewkumar will begin their quest for a state title tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York. Both Palacio (160) and Raghunandan (113) are seeded first in their respective weight classes. Sewkumar is seeded 3rd at 106. KRISHNA SEWKUMAR GETS STATE WILDCARD
It was officially announced today that Krishna Sewkumar was awarded the first wildcard for the state tournament at 106 lbs. He will join cousin Mark Raghunandan and Dylan Palacio in representing the Marines at the State Championships in Albany, NY next weekend. He is the 4th Marine to receive a wildcard. Last year, Mark Raghunandan received one and placed 2nd in the NYS tournament. In 2010, Dylan Palacio received one and placed 3rd in NYS. Dane Davis received one in 2007. (February 15, 2012)
MARINES CROWN 2 COUNTY CHAMPS; 8 ALL-COUNTY
This past weekend the Long Beach Marines finished 2nd overall in the Section 8 Wrestling Championships. In all, 8 young men earned All-County honors. Mark Raghunandan (113) defeated the defending Nassau County Champion, Robert Person of Bellmore JFK 8-7 to win his second career county title. (Click on Newsday link at bottom of story) At 160, Dylan Palacio won his third county title by defeating Joe Cataldo of MacArthur 9-4. Cataldo finished 2nd in the county this year. Krishna Sewkumar wrestled a great tournament winning four matches before falling in the finals to Justin Cooksey of MacArthur 4-3 in the finals. Krishna, who won the county title last year at 103, pinned #2 seed Kyle Quinn of Wantagh in the quarterfinals and then hammered Rocco Candela of Oceanside (2nd in the county last year) in the semi-finals. Steven Sewkumar (99 lbs.) placed 2nd. He had three technical fall wins before falling to highly ranked Jose Rodriguez of Wantagh. Sophomore Jaemen Connelly won six matches to place third at 99. Oral Allen placed 4th in the very tough 120 lb. weight class. BIG Pete Amabile placed 5th at 285. He wrestled a great tournament. In the quarterfinals, he dropped a 3-2 decision to eventual champion Dante Salkey of Uniondale. In his final match, he avenged a loss to Stephen English of Wantagh with a 3-1 victory in sudden death overtime with a beautiful double leg takedown. Fighting a 100+ degree fever, Freddy Medina (126) bounced back after losing his first match to the eventual finalist and won four matches to earn All-County honors and place 6th. The most impressive victory for the 6th seeded senior came when he defeated 3rd seeded Tim Luxmore of Bellmore JFK 13-2. Liam Fitzpatrick and Matt Gray both lost in the All-County round and ended very successful careers. Anthony Posada, Joshua Lopez, Joe Bosco and Zamarr Allen all won matches in the tournament for LB. Long Beach scored 189.5 points to place second behind the #1 ranked team in New York State Wantagh (254). Long Beach outscored the third place team MacArthur by 58 points. It was a very successful season for the team. We claimed the League 2A Championship, finished 2nd in the County Duals, won the Qualifying Tournament and placed 2nd in the Nassau County Tournament. MARINES DEFEAT 2X DEFENDING CHAMPION MASSAPEQUA 40-34 IN SEMI-FINALS OF COUNTY DUALS; DROP FINAL MATCH TO WANTAGH 42-18
On Saturday morning at Clarke High School, the Long Beach Wrestling Program dethroned the 2X defending Nassau County Champion Massapequa Chiefs and advanced to the finals of the county dual meet tournament. Long Beach jumped out to an early 25-0 lead. Steven Sewkumar (99), Krishna Sewkumar (106), Mark Raghunandan (113), Oral Allen (120) and Freddy Medina (126) got the ball rolling. Massapequa would then go on to win the next four matches to close the gap to 25-18. Dylan Palacio then flattened his opponent to put LB ahead 31-18. Massapequa picked up six points at 170 to make it 31-24 but Josh Lopez won by decision to make it 34-24. Massapequa then won by fall at 195 and by decision at 220 to make the score 34-33 LB heading into the heavyweight bout. With all the weight on his shoulders once again, Pete Amabile came through once again! Amabile pinned Tim Gungor in 2:12 to give the Marines the win 40-33. Only last week, with the League 2 title on the line, Amabile pinned his opponent from MacArthur to secure the victory for the Marines.
In the finals, Long Beach dropped the much anticipated bout to the #1 ranked team in New York State, Wantagh 42-18. Dylan Palacio's pin over Doug Rogers tied the score at 18-18 heading into the 170 lb. match, but Wantagh ran off six straight wins to capture the match and county dual meet title. Wantagh finished the season at 22-0. The team now begins the individual portion of the season as they head to the County Qualifiers next Saturday at Syosset H.S. Wrestling will begin at 10 A.M.

LONG BEACH KNOCKS OFF LOCUST VALLEY AND SEWANHAKA EAST
The Marine wrestling team ended its regular season today with two decisive victories over Locust Valley 66-12 and Sewanhaka East 56-24 at the Tommy Ryan Duals at Wantagh H.S. The duals are named in honor of former Wantagh wrestler Tom Ryan (Class of 1987) who went on to be the head coach at Hofstra University and is currently the head coach at Ohio State. The team is in action on Friday night January 27, in the first two-rounds of the Nassau County Dual Meet Tournament.
Long Beach is seeded 2nd and will face the winner of Seaford and Lawrence in the first match. The matches will be held at the Long Beach Middle School beginning at 6:30 P.M. and 8:30 P.M. (January 23, 2012)
LONG BEACH WINS LEAGUE TITLE; DEFEATS MACARTHUR
Last night, the Long Beach Marines won their second straight League title by defeating rival MacArthur H.S. 36-35. With Long Beach trailing the Generals by six going into the 285 lb. match, senior Peter Amabile pinned his opponent in 1:33 to tie the score at 35. Because LB won 8 of the 15 contested bouts, we won by criteria and a point was added. In a match covered on t.v. by MSGVarsity, a huge crowd came out to root the team on. Steven Sewkumar started off the night with a 11-3 major decision at 99 lbs. Mark Raghunandan pinned his opponent at 113 lbs. and Oral Allen defeated highly touted Anthony Boccasini by a 13-0 major decision. After dropping the next two matches, Richie Tagliagambe got the Marines back on the winning side with a hard fought 5-2 victory at 138 lbs. Dylan Palacio secured a fall at 160 lbs. With LB trailing 32-23, senior Joshua Lopez turned his opponent to his back in the waning seconds to pull out a huge 4-2 win. At 195 Zamarr Allen turned it up and won a 9-4 decision to keep LB in the game. At 220 the match score was 32-29 MacArthur. Walter Ulloa dropped a hard fought 2-1 decision to make the score 35-29 MacArthur. This set up Amabiles heroics. It was a great team effort. The match will be televised on MSGVarsity today at 4:00 p.m. It can also be watch online at MSGVarsity.com. The JV also won their match with a 27-12 victory. Winners were: Jaemen Connelly, Tyler Ostrander, Tyler O'Conner, Keith Wildstein, Dylan Kempinski and Joe Sweeney. PALACIO KNOCKS OFF NATIONAL CHAMPION REALBUTO, RAGHUNANDAN WINS AT EASTERN STATES
This past weekend, the Long Beach Marines traveled upstate to compete in the 9th Annual Eastern States Wrestling Championships in Liberty, NY. The tournament, widely regarded as the toughest tournament in New York State had 100 teams compete in it. Long Beach finished third overall with two champions and three placewinners finishing ahead of the #1 ranked team in NYS Wantagh H.S. Senior. DYLAN PALACIO was voted the tournaments Outstanding Wrestler and Champion of Champions by defeating defending National and New York State Champion Brian Realbuto of Somers (Section 1-Westchester). Realbuto is heading to Cornell in the fall. Palacio stunned the 2nd ranked wrestler in the nation with a solid, hard fought, 8-5 decision. At 113 lbs., senior MARK RAGHUNANDAN defeated Dylan Realbuto 6-5 with a last second reversal. Last year, Raghunandan was second in NYS at 103 lbs. and Realbuto was 2nd at 96. Three other Long Beach Wrestlers placed in the top eight. STEVEN SEWKUMAR wrestled tough and placed 5th. In the fifth place bout, he defeated Gerard Daly of Minisink Valley 6-5. Last week, Daly topped Sewkumar at the U-E Duals. KRISHNA SEWKUMAR also placed fifth by winning his final bout by injury default. Finally, ORAL ALLEN let the state know that he is one of the top wrestlers in NYS at 120 lbs. by placing 6th. WALTER ULLOA won two match for the Marines. The team springs into action again on Wednesday when they take on MacArthur for the League 2 title. The match begins at 7:00 P.M. at Long Beach High School and will be televised on MSG Varsity. LONG BEACH DEFEATS EAST MEADOW 51-22
Long Beach defeated East Meadow 51-22 on Wednesday night to run its league record 4-0 and set up a showdown with MacArthur next week. Winners for Long Beach were: STEVEN SEWKUMAR, KRISHNA SEWKUMAR, MATT GRAY, MARK RAGHUNANDAN, FREDDY MEDINA, ORAL ALLEN, RICH TAGLIAGAMBE, LIAM FITZPATRICK, DYLAN PALACIO, WALTER ULLOA and PETE AMABILE. The JV team also defeated East Meadow 35-0. Jaemen Connelly, Dylan Kempinski, Alan Teemer, Tyler Ostrander, Carlos Escalon, Keith Wildstein and Marke Sutton all recorded wins. The JV team also defeated Uniondale on Tuesday night at the MLK Center.
LONG BEACH KNOCKS OFF #10 RANKED TEAM IN N.Y.S. AT U.E. DUALS
The Long Beach Marines traveled to Union-Endicott High School this weekend to compete in the toughest dual meet tourney in the state. The team defeated the tenth ranked team in NYS Minisink Valley 43-40. Huge wins were recorded by Krishna Sewkumar, Mark Raghunandan, Oral Allen, Freddy Medina, Anthony Posada, Liam Fitzpatrick, Dylan Palacio and Peter Amabile. Palacio, Raghunandan and Krishna Sewkumar all went undefeated on the weekend. In other matches, LB defeated Section 4 powerhouse Chenango Forks 63-14. Mark Raghunandan defeated Section 4 Champion Jacob Green 3-2 in the spotlight match. Steven Sewkumar battled defending State Champion Kyle Kelly but eventually lost a decision. Long Beach dropped a 47-41 decision to #3 ranked Warwick Valley and a 41-39 match to Suffolk power John Glenn. The coaches were very happy with the way the team wrestled. (January 8, 2012)
MARINES DEFEAT CALHOUN 68-12
Long Beach remained undefeated in league competition by downing Calhoun 68-12. Steven Sewkumar won his match by a 17-2 technical fall to start off the night. Freshman Allan Teemer burst onto the varsity scene by scoring a 17-2 technical fall victory at 106 lbs. Another great effort was turned in by Richie Tagliagambe at 145 lbs. The team heads to the Union-Endicott Duals this weekend upstate. (January 4, 2012)
LONG BEACH CROWNS 4 CHAMPS AT MASSAPEQUA
Long Beach crowned four champions at the Massapequa tournament Thursday. This was the most of any team. Champions for LB were: Steven Sewkumar (99 lbs), Krishna Sewkumar (106 lbs.), Mark Raghunandan (113 lbs.) and Dylan Palacio (160 lbs.) Steven Sewkumar pinned #1 seeded and the top ranked wrestler in Section 9, Vinny Vespa of Monroe-Woodbury in the third period. Krishna Sewkumar defeated All-County Joe Doria of Massapequa 5-3. Doria finished 5th in Nassau last year. At 113 lbs. Mark Raghunandan knocked off the #1 ranked wrestler in Suffolk County Chris Mauriello 7-1. At 160, Dylan Palacio dominated the competition. In the semi-finals, he defeated Sean Gillen of Connetequot by injury default in the second period. Palacio led 10-3 with a minute to go in the second period when Gillen had to injury default. He then pinned the #1 ranked wrestler in Section 1 Pasqualoni of Fox Lane in the finals. At 152 lbs. Liam Fitzpatrick had a great day winning three matches. His day was highlighted when he pinned the #1 seed from Monroe-Woodbury in the semi-finals. He dropped a close decision to Andrew Hoffman of Massapequa to win the silver medal. Zamar Allen placed 4th at 195 lbs. The team is in action next versus Calhoun in a league match on Wednesday January 4th at 5:30 P.M. (December 29, 2011)

Freshman Alan Teemer and sophomore Tyler Ostrander both won titles at the prestigous Ted Peterson JV Tournament at Plainedge H.S. Both young men turned in outstanding days. GILLESPIE NAMED CAA WRESTLER OF THE MONTH
LONG BEACH 68 PLAINVIEW 4; MARINES 2-0 IN LEAGUE
In an effort to win their second consecutive League 2A Championship, Long Beach defeated Plainview 68-4 before a nice crowd at Long Beach High School. Winners by pin were: Peter Amablile, Rich Tagliagambe, Kelvin Alvarez, Liam Fitzpatrick and Dylan Palacio. Matt Gray won his match by technical fall and Freddy Medina won by a major decision to lead the Marines.
LB KNOCKS OFF NEW ROCHELLE AT WANTAGH DUALS
Long Beach defeated New Rochelle from Section One 43-29 at the Wantagh Duals. That would be the only win for the team on the day as the team wrestled poorly and had a number of key injuries. In other matches, the team lost to Sachem North, Brooklyn Tech and Hewlett. The latter is coached by former Long Beach county champion and assistant coach Stephen Jones. The team is back in action on Wednesday December 20 in a league match verse Plainview.
MARINES OPEN LEAGUE SCHEDULE WITH VICTORY
Long Beach defeated Valley Stream Central 65-20 in their first League 2A match of the season. Winners for the Marines were: Steven Sewkumar, Jaemen Connelly, Matt Gray, Mark Raghunandan, Oral Allen, Freddy Medina, Liam Fitzpatrick, Joshu Lopez, Joe Bosco and Peter Amabile. Winners in the exhibition matches were: Kenny Campos, Joe Sweeney, Kelvin Alvarez, Walter Ulloa and Glenn Rutherig. The team is now (1-0) in dual meets. The team travels to the Wantagh Duals on Saturday.
LONG BEACH BEATS #1 RANKED TEAM IN NYS
Today, the Long Beach Marines turned in an impressive performance at the Baldwin Bruin Cup Tournament. In a field loaded with top NYS teams, the Marines soundly defeated Longwood, the #1 ranked team in the state and ranked #36 in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News. Long Beach also defeated St. Anthony’s, Sachem East and East Meadow among others. Long Beach pushed the most guys into the finals (6) and crowned five champions. STEVEN SEWKUMAR (106) defeated 2011 Nassau County runner-up Rocco Candela of Oceanside 9-2. KRISHNA SEWKUMAR (113) defeated Freddy Duanau of St. Anthony’s who finished 5th in NYS last year by a 7-5 margin. MARK RAGHUNANDAN turned in a dominant 22-10 victory at 120 lbs. scoring eleven takedowns. DYLAN PALACIO dominated Eddie Jennings of Longwood in the 160 lb. final with 13-5 major decision. Finally, at 285 lbs., PETER AMABILE recorded a fall at 3:56 over Lashawn Thomas, the # 4 ranked wrestler in the county, of Freeport. ORAL ALLEN placed 2nd. MATT GRAY (113) and JOSHUA LOPEZ (182) finished in third. Fourth place winners were: JAEMEN CONNELLY (99) and GLENN RUTHERIG (220).
Capturing fifth place was LIAM FITZPATRICK (152) and FREDDY MEDINA and JOE BOSCO placed 6th. Many of our other guys won key matches and contributed to the win. They were: DYLAN KEMPINSKI (106), TYLER OSTRANDER (120), KENNY CAMPOS (132), KEITH WILDSTEIN (132), MIKE ALCIVAR and KELVIN ALVAREZ (160). The team is back in action on Wednesday with a dual meet at Valley Stream Central H.S. at 5 pm. Next weekend, the Marines travel to Wantagh High School for the David Bloom Invitatonal Tournament.
LB CROWNS FOUR CHAMPS AT THE BATTLE AT THE BEACH
This past weekend the program hosted the 8th annual "Battle at the Beach" Tournament at Long Beach High School. It was a very exciting two days. The support of the Long Beach fan base was unbelievable! They never let up cheering for our guys. The kids really fed of the energy of the crowd. The JV team dominated the competition on Friday night and crowned five champions (GLENN RUTHERIG (220), ZAMAR ALLEN (195), TYLER OSTRANDER (120), KEITH WILDSTEIN (132) and MIKE ALCIVAR. Second place finishes were turned in by MARKE SUTTON (132), RICHARD BELL (220) and ALAN TEEMOR (106). Third place finishes were turned in by ANTHONY MITTHAUER-ORZA (126), RAHMELOH HODGE (138), and JOSEM NARAINE (220). CARLOS ESCALON (106) and JUAN SORTO (285) placed 4th. On Saturday, four young men captured championships. STEVEN SEWKUMAR (106), KRISHNA SEWKUMAR (113), MARK RAGHUNANDAN (120) and DYLAN PALACIO (160). PALACIO was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament by the coaches. STEVEN SEWKUMAR won the Most Exciting match as he hit a peterson role in overtime to win the title. ORAL ALLEN and PETE AMABILE finished third with JOE BOSCO wrapping up a fourth place finish. JOSH LOPEZ and FREDDY MEDINA both captured fifth place and RICHIE TAGLIAGAMBE wrapped up a sixth place finish. The team finished in second place out of 13 teams to Wantagh.
The evening was highlighted by our annual Alumni celebration. It was great to welcome back those who had come in the past and those who attended for the first time. Geoffrey Hampton (99), Erik Walordy (09), Brad Green (80), Sammy Joseph (97), Benjamin Bodley (78), Rodney Nellums (83) and Coach Reggie Jones all made their first (of many) alumni day celebrations. The staff hopes you enjoyed the evening. It was certainly a flashback seeing Gillespie and Jones coaching together again at Wantagh.
The team will be back in action on Friday and Saturday this week at the Bruin Cup at Baldwin High School. The tournament is loaded with perennial powers Longwood, St. Anthony's, East Meadow, Sachem East and others. It kicks off at 5 pm on Friday and 10 am on Saturday.

GILLESPIE WINS BINGHAMTON OPEN FOR HOFSTRA; RANKED #5 IN THE NATION
P.J. GILLESPIE, a 2007 N.Y.S. Champion for Long Beach High School, finished in first place today at the Binghamton Bearcat Open. He won all four of his matches including a 3-2 decision over Matt Kaylor of Binghamton to win the gold. GILLESPIE is currently ranked 5th in the NCAA Division One poll. He earned All-American honors last year by placing 8th.
RAGS WINS THREE AT SUPER 32 IN NORTH CAROLINA
Senior MARK RAGHUNANDAN, won his first three matches of the day at the Super 32 Wrestling Tournament in North Carolina. He then dropped his next two matches at 120 lbs. He will return this year at a new weight, 113 lbs. in search of the New York State and National title. Last year, he placed second in N.Y.S. after placing third as a sophomore. (October 30)

Gladiators Wrestle to 1st Place Finish in Puerto Rico
This past weekend the Long Beach Gladiators Youth Wrestling Team attended the 16th Annual Sparta Cup held at the Olympic Training Center (OTC), in Salinas, Puerto Rico. Four Long Beach wrestlers represented the Gladiators and helped the team to win the team championship in the 12-13 year old age category. They were: Elijah Rodriguez (1st Place), Mathew Maquet (2nd Place), Joseph Giorlando (1st Place), and Cain Tagliagambe (1st Place). Coaches Miguel Rodriguez and Eric Maquet led the team to victory. This is the first time that Long Beach Wrestling Team captured the team championship in the Sparta Cup. PALACIO ALL-AMERICAN AT NATIONALS IN FARGO, N.D.
DYLAN PALACIO finished 8th in the brutal 152 lb. weight class to earn ALL-AMERICAN honors at the ASICS National Wrestling Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. In the competion Palacio defeated highly touted California State Champion JAKE ELLIOT on his way to the podium. His losses were to ALEX DIERENGER of Wisconsion who went on to win the weight class and who will wrestle for Olympic Champion coach John Smith at Oklahoma St and JUSTIN KOETHE of Iowa who placed 3rd. This is the fourth All-American honor for Palacio. He placed 6th in Fargo in 2009 in Greco-Roman and 5th and 3rd respectfully at the NHSCA Nationals in 2011 and 2010. Congratulations to Dylan and the whole Palacio Family. MARK RAGHUNANDAN, who finished 2nd in the nation last year, did not place after a very difficult draw. Raghunandan dropped a decision to eventual champion JOHNSON MAI of California in the first round and lost a three period battle to an opponent from Arizona who also was All-American. (July 24)
MEDINA WINS BEACH WRESTLING GOLD
FREDDY MEDINA won the Long Beach Beach Wrestling gold medal in the 120-135 lb. weight class today at National Beach. He won four matches on his way to the championship. A number of LB wrestlers past and present competed in the tournament and did well. DANE DAVIS (1st), EDUARDO DELGADO (1st), ELIJAH RODRIGUEZ (1st), ANTHONY CARDENAS (2nd), DEQUAN SIMMONS (3rd), EDISSON TIGRE-BORJA (3rd) and a host of other LB grapplers competed and did well. The 6th Annual Long Beach-USA Wrestling Club Camp was a huge success this past week. Over 65 campers came and learned some great wrestling skills and had fun. Many future All-Americans, All-State and All-County wrestlers have attended the camp. We hope to see you next year! (July 1)

LB TRIO WRESTLES FOR TEAM NY IN OKLAHOMA
Three Long Beach matmen represented TEAM NY at the National Duals in Oklahoma City, OK this past week. STEVEN SEWKUMAR (105), MARK RAGHUNANDAN (112) and ORAL ALLEN (119) all wrestled tough. The team finished in the top 12 of both the freestyle and Greco-Roman competition. RAGHUNANDAN went 10-4 in the competition and had a big win over national high school runner-up JAVIER VIERYA of Kansas. SEWKUMAR turned in a big win over Colorado State Champ Drew Romero. TEAM FIGHTS OVARIAN CANCER
The Long Beach Wrestling team participated in a chicken wing eating contest against the Long Beach Hockey Team to raise money for ovarian cancer. The event was hosted by local radio star HALF-TIME HOWIE and was broadcast live on the air from JUST WING IT, a local restaurant in town. The team was led by sophomore WALTER ULLOA who downed 13 wings in two-minutes to lead the charge. The place was packed with wrestlers from the Gladiators, Middle School, High School, and alumni. Each kid paid $5 towards ovarian cancer. It was a great event for a great cause and the Long Beach Wrestling Staff and community are very proud of the program. (May 14)
ALLEN AND PALACIO: STATE CHAMPS!!!!!
This past weekend, the Long Beach-USA Wrestling Club traveled up to Binghamton, NY to compete in the NYS Freestyle and Greco-Roman State Championships. Two young men came away winning both styles. ORAL ALLEN claimed the title at 119 lbs. in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman styles. ALLEN is a 3X League Champion for the Marines and placed 4th in the county in 2010. DYLAN PALACIO dominated the competition and also captured both styles. The two become the 24th and 25th Long Beach wrestlers to capture either a STATE TITLE in freestyle or Greco-Roman since 1999. This could be the most state titles to come from any one high school during that time period. STEVEN SEWKUMAR (2nd and 3rd), MARK RAGHUNANDAN (3rd and 5th), KRISHNA SEWKUMAR (3rd) and WALTER ULLOA (4th) also placed for the LB-USA Wrestling Club. All of these young men have now qualified for the prestigous TEAM NY and will compete in the National Championships this summer in Fargo, North Dakota. (May 9).
DEJESUS AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP
Last night, ADAM DEJESUS was the recipient of the Nassau County Wrestling Coaches Association Scholarship at the County Wrestling Dinner held at the Crest Hollow Country Club. This money will come in handy as he will be attending Nassau Community College in the fall and will wrestle. DYLAN PALACIO, MARK RAGHUNANDAN, KRISHNA SEWKUMAR and EDISSON TIGRE_BORJA were also presented with trophies and jackets in honor of their All-State and All-County honors.
ADAMS VOTED LEAGUE COACH OF THE YEAR
Last night, Long Beach Head Coach Ray Adams was voted the 2011 League Coach of the Year. This is certainly a reflection on the whole coaching staff and the great job that they did this year. Congratulations to Coaches Leo Palacio, Bernard Valentin, Wayne Hoffman, Miguel Rodriguez and Steven Jones.
PALACIO IS ALL-AMERICAN AGAIN!
DYLAN PALACIO finished 3rd this past weekend at the NHSCA National Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach, Va. He won 7 matches during the three day event and only lost a overtime match two a two time Minnesota state champion. Last year, PALACIO placed 5th in the event. ORAL ALLEN won his first two matches of the tourney at 119 lbs. but then lost to the defending and eventual champion from Texas by a decision. MATT GRAY, JAKE RAUCH and TYLER O'CONNER also competed and did not place. (April 1)
GILLESPIE EARNS ALL-AMERICAN STATUS FOR HOFSTRA
P.J. Gillespie, a 2007 NYS Champion for Long Beach High School earned All-American honors this weekend in Philadelphia at the 2011 N.C.A.A. Division 1 Wrestling Championships. Gillespie defeated his opponent from Penn to earn the All-American status. In the first round he upset the #6 wrestler from Oklahoma St. to advance. He becomes the 8th Long Beach wrestler to earn division one All-American honors. The last LB wrestler to earn D1 All-American honors was Jon Masa who placed 3x for Hofstra. He is the only 3x Division One All-American in Hofstra history. (March 20, 2011)
4 All-State Grapplers For The Marines; Finish 6th in NYS
Long Beach placed four wrestlers in the New York State Wrestling Championships in Albany this weekend. The Marines placed 6th as a team at the event. Junior MARK RAGHUNANDAN led the way as he finished 2nd in the 103 lb. weight class. DYLAN PALACIO placed 3rd at 145, KRISHNA SEWKUMAR placed 5th at 103 and ADAM DEJESUS placed 6th at 152. All four student-athletes earned a spot in the semi-finals as the Marine wrestlers went 8-0 on day 1 of the competition. Only RAGHUNANDAN was able to push through into the finals. He fell just short of winning the 9th state title for Long Beach in its storied history. It was a great effort by these young men. PALACIO, RAGHUNANDAN and SEWKUMAR will be back next year.
MARINES CLAIM 3 TITLES; QUALIFY 4 FOR STATE TOURNAMENT IN ALBANY
KRISHNA SEWKUMAR, DYLAN PALACIO and ADAM DEJESUS each won Nassau County individual wrestling titles this weekend at Hofstra University. They all will advance to the NYS Championships in two weeks at the Times Union Center in Albany. SEWKUMAR pinned teammate MARK RAGHUNANDAN late in the third period to avenge his county final loss last year. Cousins, they will both go upstate as Raghunandan will receive a wildcard. He placed third in the state last year. SEWKUMAR also won the MOST PINS IN THE LEAST AMOUNT OF TIME AWARD. DYLAN PALACIO won his second county title and will go to Albany for the third time in his career. He placed 4th in NYS a year ago. He defeated Chris Sarro of Massapequa 7-3. ADAM DEJESUS closed out his senior campaign by winning the 152 lb. championship. He downed Jesse Bader of Calhoun 4-1 in the finals. In the semi-finals DEJESUS defeated #1 seed Jack Dituro of Locust Valley 2-1. The fifth All-County grappler for the Marines was 135 lber. EDISSON TIGRE-BORJA. He dropped a tight 2-1 decision to Angelo Rella of MacArthur in the semi-finals but won his final two bouts to place 3rd. Both he and DEJESUS were 3X All-County wrestlers for Long Beach. The team finished a disappointing 4th in the team standings. Wantagh, who LB defeated earlier this year, walked away with the team title. MacArthur was second and Plainedge was third. LB DOMINATES QUALIFIER-20 WILL GO TO COUNTIES
The Marines garnered 7 individual titles and qualified 21 grapplers for next weekends county tournament at Hofstra University. The seven champs were: STEVEN SEWKUMAR (96), MARK RAGHUNANDAN (103), ORAL ALLEN (119), EDISSON TIGRE-BORJA (135), DYLAN PALACIO (145), ADAM DEJESUS (152) and JOSHUA LOPEZ (171). Second place finishers were JAEMON CONNELY (96), KRISHNA SEWKUMAR (103), MATT GRAY (112), and NICK KHOURY (140). Placing 3rd were ANTHONY POSADA (125), MARVIN MCMOORE (152), and PETER AMABILE (285). Fourth place finishers were: MIKE KASHYAP (112), KENNY CAMPOS (119), RICH TAGLIAGAMBE (125), LIAM FITZPATRICK (145), JOE BOSCO (189) and JAKE KEMPINSKI placed 5th but received a wildcard into the tourney. The team won the team championship by a large margin. ORAL ALLEN won the MOST PINS AWARD and MARK RAGHUNANDAN was voted the OUTSTANDING WRESTLER. (February 7, 2011)
DISSAPPOINTING LOSS KNOCKS MARINES OUT OF COUNTY DUALS
Long Beach hammered Mepham high school in the first round of 16 in the county dual meet tournament hosted by the Marines at the LB Middle School. In the quarterfinals Plainedge knocked off the 2nd seeded Marines 36-33. The Marines lost two close matches down the stretch and coundn't hold off the Red Devils. This ends the dual meet season for the Marines. They will now look to defend their County Tournament Title. The team resumes competition next Saturday at the Nassau County Qualifier which will be held at Long Beach High School. (January 28, 2011)
LONG BEACH KNOCKS OFF MACARTHUR; WINS LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
Long Beach defeated MacArthur 36-29 to defeat the defending champions in a hotly contested match at MacArthur. Junior JOE BOSCO bumped up to 215 lbs and won by decision to secure the win for the Marines. Other winners for the Beach were: STEVEN SEWKUMAR, KRISHNA SEWKUMAR, MARK RAGHUNANDAN, MATT GRAY, ORAL ALLEN, NICK KHOURY, MARVIN MCMOORE, and PETER AMABILE. It was a great team win, as LB were without the services of DYLAN PALACIO and ADAM DEJESUS. It was great team effort. (January 20, 2011)
MARINES PLACE 4TH AT EASTERN STATES
Long Beach placed 4th out of 83 teams at the Eastern States Wrestling Championships at Sulllivan County Community College. Junior DYLAN PALACIO won the 145 lb. championship by defeating Tory Caine of Wayne H.S. in Section 5. MARK RAGHUNANDAN and STEVEN SEWKUMAR both reached the finals at 96 and 103 lbs. respectively and placed 2nd. Long Beach had the most finalists in the tournament. ADAM DEJESUS (5th) and ORAL ALLEN (8th) also placed for the Marines. (January 15, 2011)
LB PLACES 9TH AT U-E DUALS
The LB wrestling team braved the snow and traveled to Union-Endicott H.S. in Binghamton, NY to compete in the prestigous U-E Duals. The two-day dual meet tournament pits 16 of the top teams in NYS against each other. The Marines dropped their first match to Brentwood 39-25 and then lost to 3rd ranked Spencerport. LB got on the win side with a 66-12 victory over Section One Champion John-Jay Cross River. On the second day of competition, the Marines knocked off Section 5 power Brockport in the deciding match 27-25. Edisson Tigre-Borja defeated the eventual Section 5 champion 7-2 to notch the win. In the final bout of the tourney, LB lost to Chenengo Forks (Section 4). Dylan Palacio, Adam DeJesus and Krishna Sewkumar all went undefeated. (January 9, 2011)

Long Beach opened up their dual meet season with a convincing 63-12 win over Baldwin. Steven Sewkumar started things off at 103 lbs. with a convincing pin over Sal Trigona. Mark Raghunandan pinned Kenny Yeh and then Oral Allen defeated qualifying runner-up Austin Valenti 8-3. Freddy Medina (125) and Rich Tagliagambe (130) kept the winning streak going. Edisson Tigre-Borga, Matt Sheehan, Dylan Palacio, Adam DeJesus, Brett Wildstein, Joe Bosco, and John Londono came through with pins and technical falls to close out the match. The Marines wrestle at the Bruin Cup tournament Saturday and will face the #1 ranked team in NYS...Longwood. (December 8)

The Long Beach Marines opened up the 2011 season with a hard fought victory at the 7th Annual "Battle at the Beach" wrestling tournament at Long Beach High School. Defending Nassau County Champion Long Beach edged Wantagh (2009 NYS Champs and 2nd in Nassau last year) 289 to 284 points. Syosset, who finished 3rd in Nassau last year finished in 4th. Champions for Long Beach were: Steven Sewkumar (96), Mark Raghunandan (112), Edisson Tigre-Borja (140), Dylan Palacio (152) and Adam DeJesus (160). Second place finishes were turned in by Krishna Sekumar (103) and Matt Gray (112). Joshua Lopez (171) placed 3rd. Oral Allen (119), Liam Fitzpatrick (152), Brett Wildstein (171) and Joe Bosco (189) placed 4th. Fred Medina (119) was 5th and Mike Kashyap (119) placed 6th. ALUMNI DAY A HUGE SUCCESS
The 9th Annual Long Beach Wrestling Alumni Day was a huge success. Many former LB grapplers made it out for the ceremony. The event was highlighted by the return of legendary Long Beach Head Coach Paul Gillespie. Richie Sedlik, the architect of the great Middle School teams that fed the high school was also in attendence. Harold Sherman came the furthest to be in attendance all the way from San Diego, California. The alumni voted for the Most Exciting Match, which went to 103 lb. champ Pat Skinner of Kellenberg. After the tournament, the alumni attended a social at the Whales Tale Restaurant owned by alum Greg Lapenna who was very gracious. (December 4)

Long Beach alum, EDUARDO DELGADO, won two matches for Hunter College on Tuesday night November 17. He defeated returning All-American Matt Magill of NYU 8-3 in the bout. Magill is currently ranked #3 in the nation. Also, freshman OLIVER ASTONE, won for the second time this week, winning 2-1 in overtime for Hunter. Last week, PJ GILLESPIE, wrestling for Hofstra went 2-0 for the Pride against Edinboro and Purdue. He will wrestling this weekend against Missouri, Oregon St. and Lindenwood at the University of Missouri.
SEASON OPENS WITH 67 YOUNG MEN
The Long Beach Wrestling team kicked off the 2011 campaign with a huge turnout for the first day of tryouts. The team will train and open up the season on Friday December 3 for the JV and Saturday December 4, for the varsity. We will be hosting the 7th Annual "Battle at the Beach" Wrestling Tournament. LB WRESTLING COACH MIGUEL RODRIGUEZ GARNERS YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD
On October 15, Long Beach Wrestling Coach Miguel Rodriguez will receive the Long Beach Youth Leadership Award at the annual Long Beach Latino Civic Association dinner banquet. The affair will be held at Minnesota’s Restaurant on W. Beech St. beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday October 15th. This prestigous award is the result of endless hours that Rodriguez dedicates to the youth of Long Beach. He serves the young people of this community in many capacities. He runs the recreation wrestling program, he is one of the middle school wrestling and soccer coaches, he is the head coach of the the youth traveleling wrestling team called the Gladiators, volunteers his time with the JV and varsity wrestling programs, works in the middle school as a teaching assistant, and works at the Long Beach Recreation Center. WOW! That is a lot of things that he does to make a difference in the lives of our youth. As his former coach and now co-worker, I just want to congratulate Miguel publicly for all he does and let him know how proud he has made his old coaches and the LB Wrestling Program. HAGGERTY AND MASA INDUCTED INTO LONG BEACH WALL OF FAME
It is with great pleasure to announce that two Long Beach Wrestlers, Kevin Haggerty (Class of 1997) and Jonathan Masa (Class of 2000) were inducted into the prestigous Long Beach High School Wall of Fame. Haggerty was a two-time Nassau County Champion and won the New York State title in 1997. Masa was a two-time Nassau County Champion and won the 2000 High School National Wrestling Championship. He then went on to Hofstra University where he was a 3x N.C.A.A. Division One All-American. In addition, Melvin Pollack (Class of 1959) was also be inducted. He was shot down over North Vietnam and was captured. He was held captive for six years in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton".
Long Beach wrestler Dylan Palacio, made a speech on behalf of the current student body and how the Wall of Fame inspires them. He did a great job and made us all proud. The ceremony took place on Saturday September 25, 2010 in the high school commons and reception followed the ceremony in the high school cafeteria.
Thank you to all who attended the golf outing on September 2. Over 100 people attended the outing and dinner. A big thanks to all the alumni who supported the cause! It was great to see Coach Gillespie, Coach Sedlik, and Coach Sheedy in attendence.
RAGHUNANDAN 2ND IN NATION
MARK RAGHUNANDAN did it again! He earned his second All-American honor of the week by placing 2nd in the ASICS National Freestyle Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. After going undefeated in the first seven rounds of competition, Raghunandan dropped a 2-1, 6-0 decision to Matt Garelli of Illinois in the final bout. Although he fell short of his goal of becoming a National Champion, Raghunandan became the first LB wrestler to earn dual All-American honors in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Great job! (July 24)
DELGADO, GILLESPIE AND PALACIO WIN EMPIRE GOLD
All three Long Beach grapplers dominated their weight classes to win the Empire State Games in Buffalo, NY. DYLAN PALACIO won four straight matches and pinned his opponent in the finals. P.J. GILLESPIE defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the finals and was unscored upon in his four matches. EDUARDO DELGADO also dominated the competition as he defeated Centrals Lamont Fleming in the finals to earn the Gold. Overall, it was a great weekend for Long Beach Wrestling. (July 24)
RAGHUNANDAN IS ALL-AMERICAN
Today in Fargo, North Dakota at the ASICS Junior National Wrestling Championships Mark Raghunandan earned All-American honors by placing 5th in the Greco-Roman Nationals. This past year, he won the 98 lb. Nassau County Championship, placed 3rd in N.Y.S., and won the gold medal at the state Greco-Roman Championships and placed 2nd in freestyle. Mark will be a junior at Long Beach High School in September. He along with teammates Michael Kashyap and Steven Sewkumar will compete in the freestyle portion of the nationals starting Thursday. PALACIO TO WRESTLE IN EMPIRE STATE GAMES
This weekend, Dylan Palacio will represent the Long Island Region at the Empire State Games in Buffalo. This past season, Palacio finished 4th in N.Y.S. as a sophomore and earned All-American honors in folkstyle at the National High School Wrestling Coaches Association National Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Last year, he was a Greco-Roman All-American in Fargo. Also competing for the Long Island region will be alumni Eduardo Delgado and P.J. Gillespie in the open division. Tonight, Tuesday July 20th, the LB wrestling program will be featured on the Half-Time Howie Long Island High School Sports Show. The show will run from 8-9 p.m. on 1240 AM WGBB radio. RAGHUNANDAN TO WRESTLE FOR ALL-AMERICAN STATUS
Tuesday morning, MARK RAGHUNANDAN will wrestle an opponent from Montana with the winner earning All-American status at the ASICS Junior National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. STEVEN SEWKUMAR won his first match in dominant fashion in the Cadet division but then dropped decisions to the eventual champion Dylan Lucas of Florida and Dan Newburg of Washington who placed fifth. MIKE KASHYAP lost both of his matches at 105 lbs. and did not place. He looks to join P.J. GILLESPIE, SANDEEP KUMAR (2X), and DYLAN PALACIO as Long Beach grapplers who have earned All-American honors in Fargo the past 7 years. (July 19)
GILLESPIE WINS MATCH-UP AT ADAM FREY CLASSIC
Former LB star P.J. GILLESPIE competed in the Adam Frey Memorial Wrestling Classic in New Jersey on Saturday. GILLESPIE, now wrestling for Hofstra, defeated Ryan LeBlanc of Indiana 3-1 in overtime. The event is named after former Cornell Univesity wrestler Adam Frey who passed away from cancer in December of last year. LB DOMINATES BEACH WRESTLING
The Long Beach-USA Wrestling Club dominated the 6th Annual East Coasts Beach Wrestling Championships held in Long Beach today. The club crowned 8 champions in the three age divisions. In the elementary school level, the following GLADIATORS were Champions of their weight classes: ELIJIAH RODRIGUEZ and CAIN TAGLIAGAMBE. Placing were: CHARLIE SPOTA, VINCENT DEALE, TYRESE BYRON, JOE GIORLANDO, NICK GIORLANDO, and NORMAN WILSON. In the high school division, MARVIN MCMOORE, DYLAN PALACIO and JOE BOSCO went undefeated and won their respective weight classes. Placing second was ORAL ALLEN. Placing fourth was FRED MEDINA. In the open tournament COACH MIGUEL RODRIGUEZ captured the title winning all of his matches impressively. It was his third consecutive beach wrestling title. A pair of 2007 LB grads won titles as former NYS Champion EDUARDO DELGADO captured the gold with a 3-0 win over David Foxen of the Iowa Hawkeye Wrestling Club and former NYS qualifier DANE DAVIS captured his second straight title. Finishing in second place was MIKE JIMENEZ. VINCENT HALL, DEONE WILLIAMS, and DAN MITTHAUER placed 4th. It was a great day for wrestling and a day at the beach.(July 17)

LONG BEACH NATIONAL TEAM MEMBERS LEAVE FOR NATIONALS
On Sunday, the four national qualifiers for the Long Beach-USA Wrestling Club left for the one-week training camp in Johnson City, New York. After the training camp, they will leave for Fargo, North Dakota to compete in the ASICS National Wrestling Championships in Greco-Roman and Freestyle. PALACIO AND RAGHUNANDAN WIN MASSAPEQUA TOURNEY
On friday night DYLAN PALACIO and MARK RAGHUNANDAN both claimed individual titles at the Massapequa Friday Night Lights Takedown Tournament at Burns Park. Both young men dominated the competition. RAGHUNANDAN buzzed into the finals and won by forfeit over 2010 NYS Champion Mark West of Hauppauge. PALACIO was lights out as he defeated all comers. RAGHUNANDAN WINS 11 MATCHES AT NATIONAL DUALS
This past season Mark Raghunandan won the Nassau County title at 98 lbs. and
placed 3rd in the New York State Tournament. This spring he has certainly not resting on his laurels. This past weekend he represented TEAM NY at the National Duals in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Overall, Raghunandan posted an 11-4 record. He had some outstanding victories over opponents from Missouri, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, and Michigan in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman competition. In two-weeks, Raghunandan will lead a contingent of four Long Beach Wrestlers to the National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. Also qualifying for the National Team are: Krishna Sewkumar, Steven Sewkumar, and Michael Kashyap. Kashyap in the cousin of 2x Fargo All-American Sandeep Kumar (2001 and 2003). (June 30)
8 LONG BEACH GRAPPLERS AWARDED CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS
This week eight Long Beach wrestlers are attending wrestling camps on “full scholarship”. Adam D’Auguste, Matt Gray, Oral Allen, Steven Sewkumar, Edisson Tigre, and Tyler O’Conner are attending the Granby Wrestling Camp in Virginia. This was made possible by a very generous donation made by Mr. Bob O’Conner. He is a major supporter of Long Beach Wrestling and Nassau County wrestling. Mike Kashyap and Joe Bosco were awared “full rides” to the Hofstra University Camp by Mr. Scott Arnel and the Long Island Wrestling Association. The young men are getting a great experience. SIMMONS WINS PRESTIGOUS BRIAN COHEN AWARD; ASTONE AND HALL ALSO WIN AWARDS
At the Long Beach Senior High School Senior Awards night, senior Dequan Simmons was this years recipient of the very prestigous Brian Cohen Memorial Wrestling Award. The award is named in honor of former LB wrestler Brian Cohen who was tragically killed by a drunk driver on Park Ave. The award is given to a deserving senior who has overcome obstacles to succeed in life and in wrestling. Simmons was a League Champion, led the team in pins and was a team captain this year. He has been accepted to SUNY Oneonta to wrestle in the falll. Senior Oliver Astone won the Marines Distinguished Athletes Award for Leadership. Astone was one of the captains that helped lead Long Beach to the 2010 Nassau County Wrestling Championship. He will attend Hunter College in the fall. Vincent Hall, who led the team with 36 wins as a junior, missed this season to injury, but was given the Long Beach High School Spirit Award for continuing to help his teammates in the quest for a championship. He will wrestle at Jamestown Community College next year in upstate NY. (June 7)
DELGADO AND GILLESPIE WIN EMPIRE STATE GAME LONG ISLAND QUALIFIER
When they graduated Long Beach High School in 2007, P.J. Gillespie and Eduardo Delgado were the two all-time win leaders in Nassau County history. Now, Gillespie wrestles for Hofstra University and Delgado competes for Hunter College in New York City. Last weekend, they traveled out to Rocky Point and dominated the competition by winning the Long Island Region Qualifier of the Empire State Games. P.J won the 187 lb. weight class and Eduardo the 167 lb. weight class. They will join current Long Beach wrestling Dylan Palacio in representing Long Beach and Long Island at the games being held in Buffalo at the end of July. (June 6)
PALACIO QUALIFIES FOR EMPIRE STATE GAMES
This past weekend sophomore All-American Dylan Palacio dominated the field by winning the Long Island region of the Empire State Games. Palacio will represent team Long Island in the first Games since 2009. They will be hosted by the city of Buffalo in July. Palacio will also seek to make the Long Island soccer team as well. (May 28)
SEWKUMAR DEFEATS TWO SECTIONAL CHAMPS AT FLO- DUALS
Krishna Sewkumar placed 2nd in the Nassau County Wrestling Championships this past season losing to teammate and cousin Mark Raghunandan in the finals. As a result, he did not get a chance to compete in the state tournament. This past weekend, he once again proved he is one of the top lightweights in the state. Wrestling for VHW (Vougars Honors Wrestling) Team at the Flo-Journey National Duals in Lake Placid, he defeated two sectional champs. In his first bout he beat Section IV champion Kyle Kelly 10-5. Kelly went on to place 4th in the NYS Championships. In his next match, he defeated Section VI champion Steve Michel. He also pinned another opponent and dropped a close decision to an opponent from Pennsylvania. (May28)
ASTONE ACCEPTED TO WRESTLE FOR HUNTER COLLEGE
Oliver Astone has been accepted to wrestle at Hunter College in the fall. Astone will take his talents to the New York City College and wrestle for Head Coach Mike Simon and the Hawks. He will join his brother Zachary Astone and Eduardo Delgado as Long Beach alums on the Hunter roster. Oliver finished in 3rd place in the Nassau County Wrestling Championships and was captain of the 2010 Nassau County Championship team. He is the second senior to go on to wrestle in college next year. Dequan Simmons committed to Oneonta State a few weeks back. Congratulations and best of luck! (May 19)
ANNUAL WRESTLING DINNER A HUGE SUCCESS
This past Tuesday, the Long Beach Wrestling Program held its annual end of the season dinner. This years event was held at the Monterey Restaurant in Long Beach. It was a wonderful night to celebrate the 2010 Nassau County Championship. Besides honoring the Varsity team, the Gladiators youth program and middleschool wrestlers were honored with awards. The evening started out with Coach Miguel Rodriguez presenting participation awards to our elite travel team called the Gladiators. They were also presented beautiful jackets compliments of alum Paul O’Rourke. Coach Anthony Lapenna and Coach Rodriguez then presented awards to three middle school wrestlers. Dylan Kempinski won the Most Dedicated Award, Andrew Luisi the Most Promising Award, and Rameesh Crosely the Most Improved Award. The varsity awards saw Dylan Palacio earn the Wrestler of the Year. He posted 47 wins and earned All-County, All-State, and All-American honors. The following wrestlers received the following awards: Mark Raghunandan- Most Improved, Krishna Sewkumar- Rookie of the Year, Liam Fitzpatrick- Academic Award, Oliver Astone- Leadership Award, Dequan Simmons- Most Pins, and Dylan Palacio- Most Wins. Our seniors were presented with plaques thanking and congratulating them for making it through the program. They were: Oliver Astone, Vincent Hall, Dequan Simmons, Dan Fethiere, Jonathan Vegh and Jovan Rodriguez. We wish them the best of luck. The team was also presented with jackets commemorating the county title compliments of Long Beach High School. RAGHUNANDAN DEFEATS SUFFOLK RUNNER-UP O'HARA
On Sunday, Long Beach All-State wrestlers MARK RAGHUNANDAN and DYLAN PALACIO competed in the Sayville Freestyle Dual Meet Tournament with Team Ascend. Both boys turned in excellent performances on the day. RAGHUNANDAN won a key match 1-0, 3-0 over Suffolk County runner-up and NYS qualifier Conor O'Hara of Sachem East High School. (May 16)
RODRIGUEZ WINS KIDS TRIPLE CROWN OF WRESTLING
On Saturday May 15, the Gladiators wrestled in the NYS Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships at Bay Shore High School. The team turned in an exciting performance. Winning state titles were ELIJIAH RODRIGUEZ in freestyle and Greco-Roman. RODRIGUEZ won the triple crown of wrestling as he won the folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman titles this year. Congratulations! CAIN TAGLIAGAMBE had a great day as he won the Greco-Roman state title and placed 2nd in freestyle. TYRESE BYRON placed 2nd in both styles. RAGHUNANDAN AND SEWKUMAR WIN STATE TITLES; KASHYAP TAKES 2ND
This past weekend, the Long Beach-USA Wrestling Club traveled to Binghamton for the New York State Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships. In the Greco-Roman competition at 98 lbs., MARK RAGHUNANDAN won the gold medal. He dominated the competition securing four five point throws. Teammate and cousin KRISHNA SEWKUMAR buzzed into the finals against Raghunandan but forfeited in the finals. Sophomore MIKE KASHYAP had an outstanding tournament placing second. Although, he placed second, he did finish ahead of National Champion MIKE SORIA of Kings Park, NY. Also earning All-State honors in Greco were: ORAL ALLEN (4th-112), and STEVEN SEWKUMAR (6th-98). In the freestyle competition, KRISHNA SEWKUMAR won the 98 lb. Class with a forfeit over cousin Mark Raghunandan. MIKE KASHYAP also had a great freestyle tourney dropping his final bout to decision to Soria 6-0, 5-0. Placing 5th was BRETT WILDSTEIN and placing 6th were STEVEN SEWKUMAR, MIKE FARAGLIA , OLIVER ASTONE, and ORAL ALLEN. It was a great job by all. The team placed 5th in the state in club team scores with only 8 guys. The top three finishers in each weight class qualify for the NYS National Team that will attend the National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota in July. The 4-6th place finishers are alternates. SIMMONS ACCEPTED TO ONEONTA AND WILL WRESTLE
Long Beach senior, Dequan Simmons, was accepted today to attend Oneonta State University in upstate NY. Simmons was a 2010 League Champion for the Marines and a 2x county qualifier. This season he was 29-6 with 27 pins. He will join P.J. Gillespie (Hofstra), Eduardo Delgado (Hunter), John Khoury (Brockport), and James Edwards (Jamestown) as current LB wrestlers taking on the task of being a student-athlete. Congratulations! SEWKUMAR DEFEATS ALL-AMERICAN AT EAST COAST DUALS
This past weekend, sophomores Krishna Sewkumar and Dylan Palacio, competed in the East Coast Duals at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Both boys went 3-1 on the day. Sewkumar turned in the days biggest win when he defeated 2x All-American Nkosi Moody of Illinois who placed 3rd in the ASICS Freestyle Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota. Moody also placed 4th in the Greco-Roman competition. Krishna was the New York State Champion last year in both freestyle and Greco-Roman and was a member of the New York State National Team that went to Fargo. He finished 2nd in Nassau County this past season. Palacio also wrestled well and defeated a number of state placewinners. Both boys wrestled for the Vougar Honors Wrestling Club coached by Olympic silver-medalist and World Champion Vougar Oroudov. (May 1)

PALACIO NAMED HERALD SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
This past week, Long Beach Sophomore Dylan Palacio, was named the spotlight athlete of the week for Nassau County by the Herald newspaper. After leading Long Beach to the Nassau County wrestling championship and qualifying for the state championships a second straight year and turning in a All-State performance, Palacio recently placed 5th in the National High School Coaches Association Tournament in Virginia Beach. It was his second straight All-American honor. He won 47 of 53 matches during the 2009-10 campaign and will head into his junior year with 117 career wins and only 23 defeats. (April 29)

LONG BEACH HONORED FOR WINNING COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
This past week, the Long Beach Wrestling Team was honored for winning the 2010 Nassau County Championship. On April 12, the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce honored the team by presenting beautiful medals to commemorate the County Title. The next evening, the team was recognized by the Board of Education and presented very nice certificates. Finally, on April 19, the Nassau County Legislature, spearheaded by Legislature Denise Ford, honored the team before the County lawmaking body. Each team member was presented with a wonderful certificate for being a member of the team. A big thank you to Denise Ford. (April 19)
SEWKUMAR BROTHERS WIN TITLES AT UNIONDALE TOURNAMENT
Steven and Krishna Sewkumar held down the lightweights and captured first place at the first annual Uniondale Tournament. Steven (96) won two matches by pin on his way to a first place finish and Krishna had two pins as well and a convincing 6-0 win in the finals. (April 17)
KHOURY AND RODRIGUEZ WIN NASSAU COUNTY FREESTYLE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Nick Khoury (Jr.) went 4-0 and won the gold medal at the Nassau County Freestyle Wrestling Championships at the high school level. The award is named after FDNY Fire Chief Downey who was killed in the 9/11 attacks. The award was voted on by the coaches. Congratulations and well deserved!! The nine All-County wrestlers from LB were given jackets and trophies for their accomplishments and were recognized as the Nassau County Champions. (April 7)
PALACIO EARNS ALL-AMERICAN HONORS; PLACES 5TH AT NATIONALS
Sophomore Dylan Palacio won six matches and placed 5th to earn All-American honors at the National High School Coaches Association in Virginia Beach. Four of his wins came against wrestlers who were All-Americans. Palacio dropped an exciting 11-8 decision in the semi-finals to eventual champion Mike Nevinger of New York. Both Matt Gray and Adam D'Auguste won one match each but did not place. (March 26)
RAGHUNANDAN AND PALACIO EARN ALL-STATE HONORS
Nassau County Champion Mark Raghunandan placed 3rd and 2009 County Champion and 2010 wildcard selection Dylan Palacio placed 4th. They helped lead Section 8 (Nassau County) to a second place finish in the tournament. Suffolk placed first. The duo became the 37th and 38th All-State wrestlers in Long Beach history. Both young men had an outstanding tournament. Raghunandan dropped a 7-2 decision in the semis to eventual champion Mark West of Hauppauge but won four matches in the tournament including two pins. Palacio almost pulled off the upset of the tournament when he just missed knocking off defending state champion Steven Dutton of Rocky Point.
Long Beach wins County Title, Knocking Off Defending State Champs
The Long Beach High School wrestling team captured the Nassau County Wrestling Championship at Hofstra University. Long Beach knocked off #1 ranked and defending New York State Champion Wantagh High School 207-189. The Marines had the tournament clinched before the final round began. The Marines pushed five wrestlers into the finals. Mark Raghunandan was the only winner pinning teammate and cousin Krishna Sewkumar. Finishing in second place for LB were: Edisson Tigre, Nick Khoury, and Dylan Palacio. Finishing in third were: Matt Gray, Adam D'Auguste, and Oliver Astone. Oral Allen wrestled a great tournament and placed fourth
